1840 Washington County, Tennessee Census
The oldest county in Tennessee is Washington named for General George Washington when created out to make Washington District North Carolina in 1777. This 1840 census, like all of those prior to 1850 just gives the name of the head of household, but enumerates the free white, free color and slaves in a numeral system. The problem with the 1840 census everywhere is that most people researching it ignore the second page in researching their folks. Much information can be gleaned from this second page like occupations, personal problems like blindness, deafness, etc. Then on the second page is the name of pensioners from the American Revolution or the War of 1812. Our transcription includes it all.
